I’ve interviewed Chris before, but it often pays to revisit people, especially old favourites (no, Chris isn’t old… quite the opposite), so here we are…

Christopher Stocking, Author

Christopher Stocking, Author

First, I’ll start with a brief intro. Chris and I met through the blogosphere. I can’t quite recall initial contact, but I do recall finding his blog posts entertaining and enlightening. He was a self-published author while I was still writing HEALER’S TOUCH. I enjoyed his blog posts so much, I read one of his early works. Now, I’m not going to say I was blown away… but I guess I always sensed that Chris has what it takes to get somewhere in this writing world. Is he there yet? Am I? Perhaps not yet… but it’s coming.

So, I returned to Chris’ work when he released another novel. I rather enjoyed London Darkness: Infernal Inventions, and felt it was definitely a move in the right direction in showing Chris’ growing talent. And then he released His Only Star, a YA novella, and I gave that a read, too. Again, this was a step forward, and the emotions Chris managed to bring into the book were real.

The rest… I’ve yet to sit down to (though I plan to!)…

So, Chris is young, currently self-published (though looking to seek the assistance of the traditional publishing world), and just gets better and better with each book published.

He’s one to watch.

And the best way to watch an author, is to read an author… so, you know… go take a look

And now, with no further ado… here’s that interview…

Hey, Chris. Tell us a little about yourself…

Well, first, I’m 23 years old, I’m married (I know, I know, I’m too young to be married! Or so I hear, anyway), and I love coffee. I also enjoy a few rounds of boxing (both engaging in and watching, that is).

Space Games ~99c Until Easter

DebE —  March 14, 2014 — 2 Comments

Fellow Grimbold Books author, Dean Lombardo‘s second stand-alone novel, SPACE GAMES, is currently 99c(US).77p(UK). (Note, I believe the UK price is set to 77p, but I can’t see it as I’m not in the UK, and other prices will depend on the exchange rate… as I type this, the US version is $1.01 (!! Shock, horror!))

Space Games - Cool HeaderThis is a hard-hitting satire about the reality of Reality TV Shows and the greed and bizarre levels of competition that can go along with them. How far will the contestants go to win? How far will they go simply for the other person to fail? How far will the show’s producer let it go to keep the money rolling in?

All these questions are asked and the characters are put on show to try and answer them for you.

This is not an easy read. It’s escapism for those who like to be challenged. It’s hard to truly like any of the characters because these are the kinds of people who will go to the extreme.

So, what if we sent a couple of people to the next generation International Space Station and left them to battle it out until one failed and one collected the prize money?

What kind of people would it take to go through all the trials and training to get there, only to face more tests to get the cash?

This book has a masterful go at investigating these questions. And fair enough, too. Because you just know… you just know someone will think this is a good idea one day…

The deal is only on the Amazons at the moment:

Amazon US*

Amazon UK*

* Note that both Amazon links point to the Kindle edition (which is where the deal is at, folks). The paperback edition can easily be clicked through to from there (because you just know it will be gorgeous to hold… I mean, look at that cover art!)

A writer friend of mine, Chris Stocking, is very excited to reveal the cover, designed by The Book Cover Machine, of his forthcoming novel BLACK POWDER BRIGADE.

Black Powder Brigade Book Cover

THE NEW WORLD – A group of elite soldiers known as the Black Powder Brigade patrol the world in secret, searching for strange and deadly creatures to ensure the natural order is safe.

Victoria Sorrel, operating under the lie that she is a boy, joins these men in their hunt for unusual creatures in hopes that it will satisfy her hunger for adventure. But, things take a dark turn for Victoria and the Black Powder Brigade. Colonists come up missing, an unusual number of trade ships start to arrive at Boston Harbor, and the madman Isaac Carter escapes from prison.

The colonies become overrun with monsters, murder, and betrayal.

The New World hangs in the balance, and it’s up to Victoria, The Black Powder Brigade, and some newly made friends to pry it from the clutches of evil.

I have been following Mr. Stocking’s career for some time now. I read his first published novel, the now retired BLOODCREST, and while I found it a little disappointing in places, I knew I had found a keen Writer. Every time Mr. Stocking steps out of the gate he grows stronger. I have little doubt he’s one to watch.

… no matter how much you think you know better… you probably don’t. The story knows.

So, I’m still writing. Yes, yes, I know, I haven’t kept you updated… been too busy writing, or thinking up marketing strategies for HEALER’S TOUCH – often having to remind myself that the best marketing strategy for HT is to get WARRIOR’S TOUCH out there…

But I just felt like sharing something…

This may not be true for everyone, but for me, it really is: my stories write themselves, and if I try to go against them, I get stifled.

I’ve been reminded of this fact a couple of times recenty.

A few weeks ago I had an idea for WT. I thought “That’ll be really cool, and according to well-established story beats, a good time for that to happen would be… later in the story.” Cool, I thought. I have something to work towards.

I stagnated.

I kept pushing on, telling myself “Come on, write, there’s good stuff coming.” Not that I thought what I was writing at the time was terrible, or even bad. I was just struggling to find momentum in my writing.

Then I had an epiphany. That idea that I thought would work best coming later in the story could easily Continue Reading…

Due to reasons, HEALER’S TOUCH has fallen off of Amazon’s Kindle (as have the other Kristell Ink titles – NOT Kristell Ink’s fault*). However, it is still available via Smashwords, Kobo, Barnes & Noble and no doubt many other outlets. Oh, and the paperback is still on Amazon.

I will update my Kindle links as soon as I know the new ones. I know Grimbold Books are working feverishly to get them all back up.

I am particularly annoyed that this happened now, as HT had been selling quite well the last two days. The rank leap had been staggering (for which I have my readers to thank).

Onwards and upwards, though, eh?

* Not Amazon’s fault, either, I would like to stipulate

***UPDATE: Please note, HEALER’S TOUCH is back on Amazon in Kindle and Paperback editions now (it was only gone for about a day – Phew!)***

… What books would you take with you to a barren island.

You can find out which five I’d take if there was a strict limit (take a fully loaded eReader, I say!… or tablet… something that can play music, too)… Um, where was I? Right, yes, see which five I’d take and why HERE.

Giveaway Book

Free! on a Goodreads Giveaway

Share and share alike they say. So I guess it’s my turn to share my experiences of a Goodreads Giveaway, just in case it helps those who come after me…

Well, first things first. Before I ran my giveaway, I checked out this page. It gives a nice blow-by-blow run down of giveaway results, showing you how different blurb styles and run times can affect the outcome of a giveaway. Reading this page can help you decide the ideal length of giveaway for you, and to write the most successful giveaway plug you can (e.g. Rather than the back-cover copy – which people can find easily enough – include reviews!).

I would like to add one caveat: Giveaway entries do not equal eventual sales, nor do additions to Goodreads shelves. While I was well aware of this, I was still surprised by other aspects of the giveaway.

If you’ve ever entered a Goodreads giveaway, you’ll know that when you do, there is a checkbox, already ticked, to add the book to your to-read list. Great. If you’re hoping to win a free copy then presumably you want to read the book! Well, yes, perhaps…

Check out my final numbers to see what you think:

Author Interview: Paige Daniels

DebE —  January 27, 2013 — 2 Comments

Howdy folks. Another one of these things. They’re kind of fun. And I’m just doing a few ’cause it’s that time in the lead up to release day when publicity is needed on a grand scale… like, a massive scale… and probably should have been done ages ago… oh well. I am open to the idea of more author interviews, if you’re keen. I might even pick a day of the week to do them…

Today’s Interviewee is Paige Daniels. Paige is a fellow Kristell Ink author whose book, Non-Compliance:The Sector released in November. It’s a gritty tale about a post-war America in which the citizens have, mostly, been convinced to accept having microchips inserted into the backs of their necks… for their own safety, some may believe. Others might see it as government control… and those are the people you’ll likely find in the Non-Compliance Sectors – areas where those who refuse to be chipped must fend for themselves. So, what would you choose? The cosy lifestyle and the chip? Or hard-won autonomy?

Take it away, Paige: Continue Reading…
