Music that inspires my writing

I’m still writing….

But… It’s MAY!

And MAY is NEW ZEALAND MUSIC MONTH. And, every year I do a NZMM special, where I share Kiwi music daily for an entire month, because I love music, and I’m very proud of our Kiwi musicians.

Anyway, this year, I am trying to win my city a prize of 3 years subsidised Ultrafast Broadband plus a $200,000 start-up grant for new companies to set up in our city… So, I’m going to showcase bands from Dunedin. Some may be new. Most will probably be old. But they’ll all be a little bit special.

So, right now I need to knuckle down to some writing, so here’s my first NZMM #GigatownDunedin Edition video:

Named for the flat (house shared by students) in Dunedin (number 660), Six60 have gone on to become a rather popular New Zealand group. While this song has a modern sound, I still choose to include it in my writing playlist, because, well… what girl doesn’t love to hear “This is forever”?

Mëstar was my favourite local act of the late 90s to early 2000s. I went to many guys, & even danced in the rain while they played on a covered stage in Dunedin’s Octagon.

Another great song that could fit into almost any author’s playlist…

I picked this song because it comes from the Bailter Space album I have on… wait for it… cassette! I had better get around to grabbing the mp3’s, huh?

Great background writing music!

And I’ve shared this one before, but I’m going to share it again to round out the experience…

First video in reverse? Not sure. I think Supergroove beat Weird Al to it… but I’ll have to check out where this one fits…

Hey all!

I’ve been a bit quiet. All available blogging time has been diverted to… ah… writing.

BUT!

Now, I could do the easy thing and stick up Lorde’s “Royals”, or any one of her amazing songs. But, you know, this is a forum for me to try and increase my audience, and that’s going quite nicely. So I’m keen to help expose a few other unknowns — including musicians. Because, like I said, I love music (as do many other writers).

It’s quite a lovely song, really…

Who sings it to whom? Llew to Jonas? or Jonas to Llew? Hmm…

My (3yo) son is a not very closet Michael Jackson fan, so I have this song (amongst others) in my car…

So, for you fellow writers out there, as well as the rest of you with a dream you’re pursuing, here’s another anthem to add to the playlist…

‘Cause there maybe times
When you think you lost your mind
And the steps you’re takin’
Leave you three, four steps behind
But the road you’re walking
Might be long sometimes
You just keep on steppin’
And you’ll be just fine, yeah”

Yep, this is from The Wiz, and that is Diana Ross singing with MJ.

Songs of the… whim (N+1)

I have a Winamp playlist set up on my computer. But often I want to hear music I don’t own a personal copy of. Also, sometimes I just like the idea of a band earning royalties from my listening to their song, even if I’ve already paid for that “right” years ago. I struggle to find a “real” radio station that caters to my interests, and so I tune into Pandora, or more specifically my Healer’s Touch Pandora Station (not that I don’t have others). Tonight, Pandora played Chevelle “Saturdays” for me. With a sound very similar to the Deftones, I wasn’t complaining…

But if that’s not your cuppa (that’s right, I’m trying to look after everyone here – a recipe for disaster, more than likely), you may just (like me) appreciate the painful honesty of Yuna’s “Decorate”:

*Disclaimer: Yes, I’ve posted Yuna’s song before, but… but… meh.

When I’m president…

I thought this song was appropriate in light of my promotion within my local writers’ group…

The ultimate daughter-father change-of-heart song… I think Llew might have sung a song like this… if she was the singing type.

Fun fact: when I had the time to include learning the bass in my day/week, this song was in my list. Fairly simple, but with a few nice runs. My dad was teaching me. Might get back into it one day…
