Music: New Zealand Music Month 4

Today I am going to do a bit of a showcase … purely self-indulgent, but, then, what is a blog if not utter self-indulgence with the hope that others might appreciate it.

The random number tells me I should showcase Crowded House today. But, Crowded House is such a huge New Zealand band (and, fair call to those who claim Australian … but, as the main artistic force for the evolving group was a Kiwi, and it really was just a Finn-family vehicle, I’m gonna say it’s Kiwi) that is a part of a much larger New Zealand music story … the Finn family. In particular, The Finn Brothers, but let’s not forget Liam (I saw him live before a Pearl Jam (they’re big fans of the Finns, btw) concert a few years back, and what a talent!).

So, I am going to post:

A Crowded House tune

A Split Enz tune

and a Tim Finn (because he’s my favourite) tune (… only play that one if you don’t mind the risk of crying).

On with the show … Crowded House:

Split Enz:

Pearl Jam have done this one …

And last, but certainly not least … (get a box of tissues … seriously)

Tim Finn:

I couldn’t help thinking about this song through all the media reports about the Pike River Mine disaster …

Deb E was born in New Zealand’s North Island, but her parents corrected that within months, moving south to Dunedin and staying there. Childhood nights were spent falling asleep to cover versions of Cliff Richard and the Shadows and other Rock ’n Roll classics played by her father’s band, and days were spent dancing to 45 LPs. Many of her first writing experiences were copying down song lyrics. She graduated to scientific reports when she studied a nematophagus fungus in the Zoology department of the University of Otago, trading all traces of popularity for usefulness… then traded both for fiction. Wow, had no idea Crowded House had NZ roots. Split Enz – cool name, played to death on the radio, but not my favorite sound.

We’ve always considered Crowded House to be Kiwi, although, in my research I see that they formed in Melbourne, Australia. However, since Neil Finn was the driving force, and the members have come from all over, but there has always been between one and three Finns, I think the NZ-link is the strongest. Certainly one of our most widely known acts.
I think I always appreciated the wacky outfits and make up the Split Enz guys wore. I admit, I never actually got into any of these bands past the singles. But, I understand their appeal.

Wanna talk about it?
